The opera’s libretto was based on several short stories by a German Romantic author, the pioneer of fantasy and Gothic horror, E. T. A. Hoffmann, who is the protagonist of the story. It is him who tells about his love for three women: Olympia, Antonia, and Giulietta. Every love is different, yet all are equally unachievable, as there is always an evil demon who thwarts the plans of fulfilment. Only the Muse remains faithful to Hoffman. He can love only her – this is the fate of a Poet. The music of the opera matches perfectly the dramatic layer. Every tale has a different shade and an air of fantasy, which is so characteristic of Hoffman’s writing, emanates from the entire piece. The Tales abound with wonderful musical numbers, including the famous barcarolle, the aria of Olympia’s doll, Antonia’s song and the song about dwarf Kleinzach.

Two Stories – One Dance

Conductor: Grzegorz Brajner
Main Stage
1 h 40 min | intervals: 1

It is rare on our stage to have choreography inspired by jazz music. Even more rarely the ballet dances to the sounds of the bass guitar. This is the case of the present performance. If we add that the dancers are accompanied by the composers of the music: Piotr Orzechowski (the famous Pianohooligan) in the first part, and Krzysztof Ścierański (the best bass guitar in Poland) in the second part, we can expect and intriguing and unique event.

The choreography to the performance was created by Jacek Tyski, known from his productions for the Polish National Ballet, where he still performs as a soloist. He joined two musical stories by two composers though the dance on the same the theme, following the same scenario, the same “course of emotional events”. See for yourself what effect he has achieved – what can be achieved by the mutual inspiration of artists of the body and instrumentalists.

The Haunted Manor

Stanisław Moniuszko
Conductor: Joachim Kołpanowicz
Main Stage
2 h 50 min | intervals: 1

Director, Laco Adamik, aims at revealing Polish national vices and show that, regardless of the epoch, these vices remain the same. The prologue and the epilogue refer to the present day, thus giving the show a modern framework. Thanks to its well-woven, lively plot, which is fuelled by vows of bachelorhood, constantly surprises the audience with changes of mood and delights them with humour, wit and lyricism, The Haunted Manor remains one of the Polish music lovers’ all-time favourites. It comes as no surprise, given that, musically speaking, Moniuszko’s work is perfectly crafted: melodically and harmonically inventive and scored with immense virtuosity.
