A short history of the Krakow Opera Summer Festival

The first festival of the Krakow Opera was organized in 1997, by the initiative of Director Jerzy Noworol. In the course of twelve editions, more than 150 performances have been held, viewed by over 95,000 people. The main idea of the Festival is to present outstanding Polish and foreign soloists who perform as guests in Krakow Opera performances.

The Festival has been held in summer, both in the building of the Słowacki Theatre, and in picturesque open-air scenery. The Opera was kindly allowed to stage its performances in the Wawel Castle (Straszny Dwór , Tosca, 2005), in the Niepołomice Castle (Straszny Dwór, 2002 and 2003, Baron cygański, 2008) , the Museum of Aviation (Łucja z Lammermoor, Faust, Traviata, 2008), and in Wieliczka Salt Mine Madama Butterfly, 2003). In 2004/2005 Halka, staged in Skałki Twardowskiego, was a tremendous success.

Previous editions of the Festival hosted such guests as: Mikhail Baryshnikov with White Oak Dance Project, the performers of Lviv Opera, University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, the State Theatre's Young Opera from Stuttgart, Silesian Opera from Bytom. Among the soloists, the following artists have performed in Krakow so far: world-famous bass singer Yevgeny Nesterenko, soprano singer Irena Milkievičiute, tenor singer Mario Ya Lin Zhang, soprano singer Irina Zakyan, and Polish soloists, successfully performing on well-known European stages: Joanna Kozłowska, Barbara Kubiak, Joanna Woś, Małgorzata Olejniczak, Marcin Bronikowski, Romuald Tesarowicz, Artur Ruciński, Andrzej Dobber.
