The 2017/2018 artistic season
As usual, the Krakow Opera Summer Festival, which runs from late June to early July, ended this year’s artistic season. The Festival abounded with performances, concerts and other special events. In the 2017/2018 season, the Opera staged five premieres, of which Bellini’s “Norma”, Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena”, Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” and Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci” combined into a single performance, are important pieces in repertoires around the world. Orff’s “Carmina Burana”, which we presented a few years ago at the Wawel Castle, was this year successfully staged as a ballet performance at the Opera. As for our youngest spectators, we have devoted one of the “episodes” in the series entitled “Song – The Theatre of the Word” especially to them. The performance entitled “Mr Tralaliński” contained works by Polish composers dedicated to children. During the 22nd edition of the Krakow Opera Summer Festival we had the pleasure of hosting outstanding performers, including the world-renowned opera artist Aleksandra Kurzak, whom we could hear during the “World Opera Arias” concert, as well as dancers of reputable European and Russian ballet ensembles, who presented their programme as part of this year’s “Grand pas...!” ballet gala.
The Opera played host to various concerts: the concert to inaugurate the season, concerts of Christmas carols, “New Year’s Eve Concert”, “New Year's Concert” at the Wieliczka Salt Mine, Carnival concerts, including the traditional “Shrove Tuesday” concert, as well as concerts in NowaHuta, NowyWiśnicz, MiasteczkoŚląskie, and Miechów. “The Elixir of Love” was staged twice as an open-air performance: at the Lanckorona market square, and at the foot of the castle in Niepołomice. We staged Kálmán’s “Countess Maritza” at the Rzeszów Philharmonic, and during the Adam Didur Festival in Sanok.
Szymanowski’s “King Roger” directed by M. Znaniecki was presented as part of the Eurokontext International Festival in Bratislava. We celebrated Michał Znaniecki’s 25th work anniversary with the staging of “Looking for Lear: Verdi”. To mark that event, we also organised an exhibition and a book promotion. We surely did not forget the 90th birthday of our prima donna Jadwiga Romańska. We also organised special concerts to commemorate IwonaBorowicka, JanuszŻełobowski, and Marian Lida. Exhibitions dedicated to the opera were displayed in the “Opera Gallery” at the Mezzanine, and various educational projects were developed for children and the youth.
We would like to extend sincere thanks to our Spectators, Enthusiasts and Friends for being with us in the 2017/2018 artistic season. See you in September this year!
