On the eve of Palm Sunday, April 13th, at St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe Church in Oświęcim, our ensemble performed “Requiem,” Giuseppe Verdi’s monumental work, a synthesis of Italian opera style and sacred music. On Palm Sunday, the ensemble performed the piece once again at our theatre.

I am delighted by your presence and by this event with which we begin this Holy Week, the Paschal Triduum. I wish that this time may be spiritually fruitful for all of you and that your faith in eternal life be awakened, said fr. Mariusz Kiszczak, rector of the parish. While thanking the residents of Oświęcim for coming to the Krakow Opera’s event, director Bogusław Nowak underlined: Verdi’s “Requiem” is a piece often played during this time that is so special for us. Through the help of music, we want to bring you into the world of focus and reflection.

We also heard from the following soloists: Katarzyna Oleś-Blacha, Anna Lubańska, Mihail Mihaylov, Volodymyr Pankiv, as well as the Choir, prepared by Jacek Mentel, and the Krakow Opera Orchestra. The ensemble, consisting of nearly 140 members, was led by Tomasz Tokarczyk.

Among the numerous guests, the following persons were present: Janusz Chwierut, mayor of the city of Oświęcim, Andrzej Bojarski and Krzysztof Kania, the first and second deputy mayor, fr. Jan Nowak, director of the Centre for Dialogue and Prayer in Oświęcim. The audience awarded the artists with standing ovations.

The performance in Oświęcim was part of the “Opera in the region” project, co-financed by the Krakow Province Assembly.
