Carmina Burana

Carl Orff
About

“Carmina Burana”, called by some people a stage cantata and by others – an oratorio, is based on secular mediaeval songs, discovered in 1803 in the Bavarian monastery Benediktbeuern. Carl Orff selected from this vast collection of texts, created by vagrants, students and wandering clerics, 24 songs and composed them in some sort of a libretto. The first part comprises songs celebrating nature and the awakening spring, the second part is a praise of Bacchus and the third one tells of pleasures of love. The motto of the entire piece is apotheosis of life and affirmation of the world. Only approval to order and structure of the macrocosm will allow a human to maintain purity of soul and live according to nature.

“Mr Tralaliński” is a show aimed at children aged 6-10; it is a combination of music by outstanding Polish composers and of poetry written for children. The performance includes selected songs from the “Alphabet” by Witold Lutosławski, which the composer called children's songs and annotated: “to be performed for children and by children.” As described by Mieczysław Tomaszewski, musicologist: "There is simplicity in them, achieved through concentration, through not rejecting certain tools, and using a rich selection thereof, but nonetheless in a subtle, allusive manner, relying on the sensitivity and intelligence of the listener.” The artists also perform the ballad “Old Man and Old Woman” by Stanisław Moniuszko, written to the text by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski; “Five Songs for Children” with lyrics by Józef Czechowicz — Tadeusz Baird's only piece that is a combination of music and children’s poetry, and several pieces from “Children's Rhymes” by Karol Szymanowski, composed to the poems of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna. Although these are songs for children, their quality and artistry made them a staple of some of the most outstanding singers.

“Ongaku”, a family-friendly spectacle maintained in fantasy style, is a musical tale of Janek – a teenager, who lost his mother and can’t find common ground with his father. He creates the eponymous Ongaku land in his imagination. The warrior Merodi arrives from the land and takes the boy into the world of secrets, search for courage and openness. A journey into three worlds begins. As legend has it, there are three stones of truth in the worlds. Thanks to them, Ongaku, destroyed by the evil Waru, will regain its balance. These three worlds are interconnected and become a symbol for our tolerance, understanding of other people, and the ability to look at the world through their eyes.

“Ongaku: The Three Stones” is an innovative spectacle adapted for audience members with hearing, visual and locomotor disabilities. Suitable elements, such as, for instance, audio description, sign language, visual and sound effects allow all audience members to learn about the world of Ongaku sounds, while educating and making the understanding of other people easier.
