THE INAUGURAL CONCERT <br> Beata

THE INAUGURAL CONCERT
Beata

Concert version of Stanisław Moniuszko’s opera

Conductor: Tomasz Tokarczyk

"Beata" is a comic opera referred to as an operetta by the author himself, and as a musical comedy by later researchers. This one-act work premiered in 1972, four months before the composer's death. It was the last opera he completed.

"Beata" takes place in Switzerland, making the opera the composer's second work, after "Paria," whose plot is set outside of Poland. The author of the libretto is Jan Chęciński - the creator who previously collaborated with Moniuszko on such operas as "Verbum nobile", "The Haunted Manor" or the abovementioned "Paria." The opera's plot revolves around the love affairs and physical ailments of the characters, but eventually concludes with a happy ending.

Searching for the King
Opera Studio
1 h 20 min

"Searching for the King" is a universal story about Independence and national identity. The script of Michał Znaniecki's original play is based on Juliusz Słowacki's "The Spirit King" and Shakespeare's "King Lear."

The Spirit of the Nation — an eternal revolutionary, destroyer of existing forms that develop through cataclysms and revolutions and calling for national solidarity contribute to the guiding motto of the show. The main character of the performance is the King, a symbolic figure, a leader — a character drawn from broader literary contexts, reaching back to Shakespeare's King Lear. He is a metaphor of sorts for the Mother-State, a kingdom-State.

"La Traviata", based on the novel "The Lady of the Camellias" by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is a story of a fallen woman, a high-class Parisian courtesan and her salvation through a sacrificial offering of love and death. Krzysztof Nazar dispenses with the historical costume and the social context of the plot, focusing instead on the characters’ psychology, emotions and motivations. In his interpretation, Violetta Valéry faces the fact of terminal illness and the inevitability of the end of life. Disillusioned, she decides to enjoy the remaining time to the maximum. But that is exactly when she encounters true love, and with it values that change her vision of the world and people.

"Mr Tralaliński" is a show aimed at children aged 6-10; it is a combination of music by outstanding Polish composers and of poetry written for children.

The performance includes selected songs from the "Alphabet" by Witold Lutosławski, which the composer called children's songs and annotated: "to be performed for children and by children." As described by Mieczysław Tomaszewski, musicologist: "There is simplicity in them, achieved through concentration, through not rejecting certain tools, and using a rich selection thereof, but nonetheless in a subtle, allusive manner, relying on the sensitivity and intelligence of the listener."
