The Haunted Manor

The Haunted Manor

Stanisław Moniuszko
Conductor: Piotr Wajrak
Performance outside Performance outside
Marquet Square in Lanckorona
2 hrs 50 min | intervals: 1

Our artists will once again visit the picturesque Lanckorona, this time presenting The Haunted Manor. The premiere performance of Stanisław Moniuszko’s famous opera took place in Warsaw in September 1865 and, to no surprise, this synthesis of traditional Polish culture, evoking the splendour of Polish 18th century opera, triggered a real patriotic manifestation among the audience. The piece is still included in fixed repertoire of most opera theatres in Poland and is often performed in other venues as well. Plenary performances marvel with their use of the surrounding nature which becomes a part of stage design, and an effective way of popularising the opera and gaining new audiences for this piece. Lanckorona market will soon be filled with the sound of Miecznik’s Polonaise, Skołuba’s aria, or one of the most amazing dramatic arias in the history of Polish opera - Stefan’s aria: Quiet All Around, Bright Night, Clear Sky...

At the intersection of Lubicz and Borowicka Streets

At the intersection of Lubicz and Borowicka Streets

65th anniversary of Iwona Borowicka's debut and 35th anniversary of her death

Conductor: Tomasz Tokarczyk

She performed on the Krakow stage for over 37 years. When she was leaving, 15 thousand people were saying their goodbyes, a street at which the building of The Krakow Opera is located was named after her. Iwona Borowicka was a living legend. Were she alive, we would be celebrating her 90th birthday. To commemorate the Krakow prima donna, the singer boasting of a unique lyrical soprano, we wish to invite you to an extraordinary concert, the programme of which was created out of the fragments of the most beautiful parts in which Borowicka starred - Lisa in The Land of Smiles, Hanna in The Merry Widow, Viktoria in Victoria and Her Hussar, or Sylva in The Gipsy Princess – her final role sung in Krakow.

“Norma” is believed to be a perfect opera in which the composer, Vincenzo Bellini, demonstrated inexhaustible melodic invention; the musical layer was given a sublime and noble expression, while the themes are “sculpted in white marble”. The title character is a high-priestess torn between her love to a man who is an invader and her social service, and between her love to own children and her desire for revenge as a betrayed mistress. The conflict between love and obligation, and the private and public sphere is very emotional here, truly human and universal.
